Thomas was on the team that brought SHINE’s fusion technology from concept through construction and commissioning. He played an integral role in initial power-up and testing and was hands-on in the day-to-day operation of the system.
Professional experience
Thomas joined the ZettaJoule team from TerraPower, where he spent three years working on the company’s Molten Chloride Fast Reactor (MCFR) project. He contributed to the design of the Molten Chloride Reactor Experiment and later led a team developing the conceptual design of the nuclear island for a commercial-scale MCFR.
Thomas spent six years at SHINE Technologies where he held roles as a nuclear engineer, experimentalist, operations supervisor, and commissioning manager. He was instrumental in completing the final design and licensing of a medical isotope production facility and developed and executed its commissioning plan.
He began his career at AREVA, where he worked for eight years performing radiation transport calculations to support the light-water reactor fleet, new reactor design projects, and spent fuel storage.
Education
Thomas holds a bachelor’s degree in nuclear engineering from the University of Wisconsin, as well as a graduate certificate in criticality safety and a master’s degree in nuclear engineering from the University of Tennessee.

Outside of work, Thomas and his wife are busy supporting their three children in academics and competitive jiu jitsu.
They also have a special family tradition. Every year, one of their children gets a one-on-one trip abroad with Dad. Past destinations have included Ireland, France, the Netherlands and Japan. By rotating annually, each child gets a memorable adventure every three years.
